ProTools at Studio Litho

Non-linear recording equipment is now part of practically every record done at Studio Litho.

Typical Uses

Recording The cheap alternative to that yummy analog tape... The rates at Litho include one recording platform which could be an analog 24-track machine or the ProTools rig. A typical full-length record could cost you $750 to $18,000* in tape charges.
A ProTools record will only cost you a few hundred in archive costs. The only problem with this is portability. A ProTools session tends to be a pretty universal creature these days so your only concern might be for how useful your archive will be in the future. Litho has a basement full of abandoned 2" masters for bands that no loger exist that says you probably shouldn't worry about it.

Overdubbing The quickest way to add all the takes you need... Whether you're making a 24-track, 48-track, or a 196-track record, you will invariably run out of tracks during overdubs. Then you have to start deciding, on the fly, whether to keep the drun room mics, or if that 3rd take has anything in it.
OR... sync a ProTools session to your tape, make a monitor mix onto two tracks, and now you can give the singer thousands of takes without sweating. Later you can spend a good month comping it all or just go back to that 3rd take which really had a lot of charm and use one of the plug-ins to fix the tuning.

Editing ...because you can't UNDO a razor blade. The truth is, the vast majority of major label records are built as much as they are recorded. It's O.K. You don't have to feel guilty about it. Editing is just the final step in composing a pop song.

Mixing All the bells and whistles... At Studio Litho we have a great pile of warm, friendly, sexy analog EQ and compression. All this stuff sounds great whether you are using it to record through or as inserts in a non-linear mix.
•If you are mixing to DAT you can use all 24 analog I/Os as channel inserts or effects sends.
•If you want to try a multitude of EQ or compression settings with an analog device you can capture each setting as a different take and then have all of them available without sweating knob positions.
•Recall a mix weeks later and really have it Totally Recalled.
*Really, it happened once. Long story.
